What is maca powder?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a hardy plant found in South American countries. Once harvested, the maca root is dried and powdered. Maca powder is fairly cheap to buy in countries such as Peru where it is traditionally used to enhance nutrition and fertility. It is a very good source of vitamin C, Iron and Copper. Maca also contains vitamin B6, potassium and manganese.

How do I use it?

Maca powder has a malty, slightly sweet flavour. The Carob & Maca Paleo Raw Brownies are a hit on our Make It Healthy Stall. Maca powder is widely available and is used in smoothies, cereals and healthy sweet treats. It has a distinct taste – one teaspoon is sufficient in a smoothie.

Is it good for hormones?

Scientists think that maca acts like testosterone when absorbed into the bloodstream. In men, maca may help increase sperm count, sperm mobility and sexual desire. In women, a daily dose may help improve libido by regulating the production of luteinising hormone in the pituitary gland.

Anti depressants can reduce sexual desire, which may also be helped by maca powder. In a clinical trial, a dose of 3 grams per day had the best results of increasing libido in female participants.

Will it work for me?

For those in need of a fertility boost or increase in libido, maca may be worth a shot. It definitely won’t do any harm in small amounts. However, more rigorous testing is needed on larger groups of humans to draw firm conclusions on its effectiveness on sexual function.
